Sixteen generic drugs (28 brands) - including certain immunosuppressants, cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, calcium-channel blockers to treat high blood pressure, hormones, antihistamines, anxiety medications and drugs used to treat HIV - currently warn of a potential interaction with grapefruit or its juice. Grapefruit juice (all brands, whether fresh or from concentrate) contains natural substances that suppress intestinal enzymes that are responsible for breaking down (metabolizing) medications. This can lead to a higher amount of medication in the body and increased drug effect, and greater risk of side effects or toxicity. Non-interacting alternatives exist within most classes of medication for patients who need a medication that may interact with grapefruit juice, but wish to continue to consume grapefruit or its juice. Most over-the-counter drugs do not interact with grapefruit. Patients should ask their doctor or pharmacist or visit www.DrugInteractionCenter.org for more information.
