Protecting the Brain with Progesterone
Progesterone Treatment May Provide Answer for Acute Traumatic Brain Injury
http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=3222040
Accessed June 5, 2007

“Traumatic brain injury, also called TBI, has become the signature injury of the war in Iraq -- an alarming realization, given that many doctors feel effective treatment for brain injury is currently lacking.” In a small, preliminary study of 100 patients at Emory University, published recently in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, doctors gave brain injury patients high intravenous doses of the pregnancy hormone progesterone within 12 hours of injury, and “cut their risk of dying by 57 percent.”

Compound druggists take it personal

Accessed May 17, 2007

This article discusses the numerous benefits of compounding and highlights discussions with patients and pharmacists.

Three years ago, a veterinarian told Alice MacLeod her cat, Pepsi, wouldn't make it through the night. The orange tabby was battling a thyroid condition but refused to take medication. Options seemed scarce.

"He doesn't like shots. He doesn't like anything. And the vet said, 'You know, they can compound it into a gel you put in the ear,' " said MacLeod, of Munhall.

Pepsi, now 19, might be as devoted as MacLeod to compounding, the age-old tradition of customizing medicine. His thyroid condition is under control and MacLeod has fewer problems feeding him medicine in the form of gels and chicken-flavored liquids.
